The subject of my blog will be the changes in the music business.
This is a sequel to my last blog about illegal downloading.
Last Sunday I went to a lecture from (in my opinion) the most famous Belgian artists in the last 25 years. I’m talking about the 2 brothers Dewaele from Soulwax and 2manydj’s.
The lecture was about the future of music and the music business.
The reason why I am writing this blog is because Stephen Dewaele told us something that I knew but for a strange reason got my attention.
“People used to go on tour to promote the new album, now a days people record a new album to go on tour”.
Because artists don’t get a lot of money anymore from selling records, they need to go on tour to earn money.
The only way they can go on tour, is if they record a new album. Except the big arena bands because it doesn’t matter if they record a new album, everywhere they go the show is sold out because they have a very big fan base. Other bands need a new album.
You can ask yourself if labels are still necessary, I don’t think so.
People will hear the music, whether bands release it in their country or not.
So you can record an album and sell it online yourself or even give it away for free. After this you can go on tour and people will pay 25 euro’s for a ticket.
The artist will be able to ask more money for a gig than 20 years ago, so the money they lost on selling records, they earn at the gigs.
Like this everyone will be happy, artists are earning money again and the people have free music.
Well, maybe not everyone will be happy but the labels earned enough money in the ’90..
